Leyte Guv Calls HEIs to
Address Job Mismatch
TACLOBAN
CITY - Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla called on
members of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the region to
help address the continuing problem on job mismatch and produce
market-driven graduates.
This was among those emphasized by the governor during his
opening remarks at the recently-held Consultative Conference of
Higher Education Institutions in Eastern Visayas which was also
attended by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson
Dr. Patricia Licuanan.
Gov. Petilla called for collaborative linkages between the
academe, the industry and government to create an effective
bridging program to successfully match requirements with
available supply of graduates or skilled-workers from various
educational institutions currently needed by the industry.
He added that there is a need to focus on the competency and
competitiveness of their graduates towards the current skills
requirements and related career preparation of leading
industries.
The governor shared that what the provincial government is
doing towards this end is through the conduct of Industry Forum
where it invites the different colleges and universities in the
province and the region together with representatives from
various leading industries in the country in one venue to
collaborate on how to build their education and training
capabilities as a major source of manpower.
The industry forum also provides tie-ups between Leyte schools
and industries, particularly on how modern technology
requirements of industries can be matched with the present
school curriculum.
This consultative conference recently conducted by CHED is
specifically conducted to provide a forum for awareness on CHED
programs and projects; to discuss emerging trends, issues and
concerns affecting higher education, and to bring together HEI
administrators with a view to networking and learning.
It was learned that CHED utilizes an annual work plan to
accomplish its mission and to identify and pursue programmatic
goals and objectives within each of the identified goals.
In her keynote address, Dr. Licuanan agrees to the point
stressed by the governor on the need to address the job mismatch
in the country.
Meanwhile, she stressed three points on the road that CHED will
be treading which include Rationalization, Quality Education and
Access.
Some of the points that she mentioned are the
institution of a rational typology of Higher Education
Institutions with a proper and meaningful category to deal with
the huge number of HEIs in the country, confrontation of the
proliferation of state universities and local colleges,
harmonizing the roles of Public and Private HEIs for less
duplication and better synergy and CHED confrontation of the
education-job misalignment.
